Thursday night was the NFL Honors where the league gives out its big individual awards for the season. For whatever reason, this is something NFL fans, including Pittsburgh Steelers fans get heavily invested in. Let’s take a look at how things went for the Steelers and offer some takeaways.
It's OK that T.J. Watt didn't get DPOY
The final vote for DPOY went to Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett and that’s ok. The vote was very close and both guys are elite players. No trophy diminishes the impact of Watt on the Steelers
Cam Heyward finally gets what he deserves
After six nominations including three years in a row, Cam Heyward finally won Walter Payton Man of the Year. As upset as fans are about Watt missing out on DPOY, they should spent that energy on being happy for Heyward instead.
Props to Joey Porter Jr.
I have to admit I was shocked that cornerback Joey Porter Jr. got one first-place vote. He finished fifth overall and his arrow is pointing straight up. He is going to be a star in the league sooner rather than later.
No votes for Mike Tomlin?
Mike Tomlin finished seventh in the Coach of the Year but didn’t get any first-place votes. I’m sure this will be as divisive among the fanbase. Many of them think Tomlin’s effort this morning given all the injuries and coaching issues was a great effort. Others will continue to use this as ammo that Tomlin should be fired.
