4 Steelers NFL draft surprises we could see on Day 2

For the Pittsburgh Steelers Day One of the 2020 NFL draft was completely uneventful. The team was able to sit back and spectate the whole event heading into Friday when the action starts for them. Fortunately for the Steelers, thanks to the trade that brought them Minkah Fitzpatrick, they didn’t have to worry about technical difficulties in the new virtual draft format.

But what is going to happen today in the second and third rounds? Here are some predictions.

A safety in the second round

It seems the league decided as a whole not to draft any safeties in the first round. This means when the Steelers go on the clock with the No. 49 overall pick, they could have their choice of defensive playmakers. The Steelers have one of the top safeties in the league in Minkah Fitzpatrick but there could be a shot to adds starting-quality third who might eventually replace Terrell Edmunds.

With so many quality players sliding out of the first round, Pittsburgh might be in a position to make a trade back and stockpile some extra picks. The Steelers don’t currently have a fifth-round pick at all but do have two picks in the third. However, it would be good if Pittsburgh could find a way to secure a second pick in the Top 100.

We saw four quarterbacks come off the board on the first night of the NFL draft. And seeing the Green Bay Packers make a move to go get Jordan Love in the first round has to make you wonder if the Steelers are ready to do something similar to secure Jalen Hurts. The Packers are thinking ahead to life after Aaron Rodgers, Pittsburgh could take a queue from that sort of forward-thinking.

The Steelers front office has been very quiet this offseason, even by their standards. So, as their first pick in the draft approaches, nothing they will do should be a shock. Thanks to a busy offseason, the Steelers don’t face any serious dilemma at any particular position so fans should expect the unexpected.
