This may be flying a bit under the radar with all the ramp up to the 2019 college football season going on, but the Buckeyes are still somewhat surprisingly in the picture for four-star shooting guard Keon Johnson out of Bell Buckle, TN.
Ohio State is seemingly only in the picture because of the relationship Johnson had with recently hired assistant coach Jake Diebler, but somehow Johnson keeps eliminating schools and keeping the Buckeyes on the list. Diebler had already established a rapport with Johnson from his days at Vanderbilt and carried it over
Johnson named Ohio State, Tennessee and Virginia as a final three back in mid-May, but the Cavaliers are now out of the mix due to scholarship limits there. It’s now possible that the Buckeyes could be the last team standing.
So, the No. 6 rated shooting guard and 31st overall recruit in the entire 2020 class according to 247Sports is still apparently very serious about looking at Ohio State.
“Coach Diebler, obviously he came from Vanderbilt,” Johnson said, picked me up from there. As soon as he got (to Ohio State), he put my foot in the door there. I had a great official visit there. I really like the campus there…. Distance doesn’t play a factor in my recruitment,” Johnson added. “It’s basically up to me to make the decision.”
While Ohio State still has to be considered an underdog to lure Johnson away from the home state Tennessee program, it clearly sounds like there’s a better than token chance here.
