The world is filled with infinite number of creatures and organisms. In fact, many of them still remain as mysteries to human beings. However, there are some rarest of the rare animals that will make us pause for a moment and wonder about the vastness and majestic beauty of the universe. In this article, we will explore those hidden gems of nature’s magic.
1. Tardigrade
Tardigrade is a wonder of the universe that can be found almost everywhere on earth. Whether its soil, water or ice; these animals don’t care. Also known as water bears, this extreme toughness and resilience is the quality that makes them very unique. They are very small. In fact, if you measure their size, one tardigrade will be 0.1 to 1.5 mm long.
Did you know that scientists took these animals into space multiple times and conducted research up there? They are the first known animals to survive in direct exposure to the vacuum and extreme temperatures of outer space. If you put them in extreme heat or cold, their bodies will fall into a sleep-like state. Most of their internal functions shut down in this state and they will come back to normalcy once their surroundings become safe again.
2. Aye-aye
Aye-aye is a rarest of the rare lemur that can be found only in Madagascar. It has the “weirdest” appearance with huge eyes and ears, along with a long and thin middle finger. Their way of hunting is also unique. Once they have spotted an insects, they will use this special finger to tap on trees. Then they will pull those insects out, placing them directly in the mouth.
When can you see aye-ayes? Visit Madagascar at night. Aye-ayes will become active mostly during the night. We must realise the fact that they play an important role in maintaining the balance of nature by controlling insect population. But, certain communities consider these poor animals as omen of misfortune and death. Thus, they are getting endangered today.
3. Axolotl
This is a cute aquatic animal that can be found mainly in lakes at Mexico. A key aspect that makes them very special is their amazing ability to regrow lost body parts. Whether its a leg, tail or even parts of the brain or heart; axolotl will make sure that they regrow. Worms, insects and certain small fishes are axolotl’s favourite dishes. However, like aye-aye, these animals are also greatly endangered due loss of habitat and pollution.
4. Pangolin
Pangolin is a shy animal that is present mainly in some parts of Africa and Asia. They have bodies that are covered in protective scales that are very hard. You can see them curling up into a tight ball when threatened. This is their way of protecting themselves. They have long tongues that are sticky in nature. Ants and termites are their main food items. Like aye-aye, pangolins also play a crucial role in controlling insect population. But, sadly, they are also highly endangered.
