4 questions from a dark and thrilling trailer for Star Wars’ ‘The Mandalorian’

The underbelly of the Star Wars universe looks fun.

“The Mandalorian,” a Disney+ TV show set to premier on Nov. 12, seems interested in exploring the darker sides of the Star Wars universe. At least, that’s what they’ve teased in their second trailer for the show. It’s also what executive producer Jon Favreau promised in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. In “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” we got a taste of organized crime and the galaxy’s darker characters — but not like this. Han Solo is a space cowboy, but he’s a goofy and lovable protagonist. The Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) is a space cowboy, but in a much more lethal way. He’s a vigilante and a clear anti-hero.

1. Do we find our hero in a state of desperation?

Perhaps The Mandalorian is in trouble in this era of the Star Wars timeline (after the fall of The Empire in “Episode VI: Return of The Jedi” and before the rise of The First Order in “Episode VII: The Force Awakens”).

“Is the world more peaceful since the revolution? It is a shame that your people suffered. But bounty hunting is a complicated profession,” says Werner Herzog’s still-unnamed villain.

Judging from the scenes in the trailer, the world is not actually more peaceful since the revolution. It appears quite violent. But the The Empire’s decline has probably killed the demand for bounty hunters. Palpatine and company were likely to the top employer in the galaxy. What’s more, The Mandalorian seems to be in immediate danger — though he’s not intimidated.

“Mandalorian, look outside, they’re waiting for you,” Herzog says.

“Yeah. Good,” says the Mandalorian.

2. What’s this thing?

Not even StarWars.com could identify this mystery beast. But of course, The Mandalorian is shown trying to tame the monstrosity.

3. Whose side is this droid on?

If the empire had mass-produced this model, they would’ve won the war. This machine seems to know its way around a blaster.

4. Does The Mandalorian have a love interest?

There’s little said about The Mandalorian in the two action-packed trailers. The Mandalorian doesn’t say much either. Apparently, he’s “the best bounty hunter in the parsec.” He’s obviously a daredevil who has a lot of enemies. But we don’t know much about the man under the steel suit — not yet. Perhaps he’s got a love interest. They seem to be indicating as much.
