4 potential Steelers cap casualties this offseason

The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the most talented rosters in the AFC. When you have a future Hall of Famer at quarterback and an elite defense, you will always be in a position to be competitive. But this is a team that still has some holes, especially in terms of quality depth.

If some veterans become available as late cap casualties, the Steelers might have to free up some space themselves to get them into the fold. Here are four guys who could be late cap cuts.

OT Matt Feiler $3.259 million

As of now, Feiler is the starting right tackle. He is also playing on a one-year contract worth just north of $3 million. Feiler is a nice player but there is a lot of young talent on the roster such as Zach Banner and Chuks Okorafor both have the potential to win the starting right tackle spot. If this happens and Feiler isn’t needed at left guard, he could be a late cut.

P Jordan Berry $1.8 million

The Steelers have been very patient with Berry despite his gross inconsistency. This offseason the Steelers brought in a legitimate punter to compete with Berry in Corliss Waitman. With a cap savings of nearly $2 million, the Steelers might think that money can be better spent elsewhere.

DT Chris Wormley $2.133 million

The Steelers may have just signed Wormley but this doesn’t assume he makes the final roster. Wormley is a solid run-stopper but doesn’t offer much beyond that. With Stephon Tuitt returning and the emergence of Isaiah Buggs as well as the drafting of Carlos Davis, Wormley’s spot on the team is hardly set.

DT Dan McCullers $1.5 million

Pittsburgh has been patient with McCullers over the years despite the fact he’s offered very little return on their investment. As with Wormley, McCullers finds himself among a crowded group and that $1.5 million in cap space could be used elsewhere.
