4 potential Rangers player upgrades as £30m Celtic shootout has Steven Gerrard thinking big

It might seem strange suggesting there's a need for Rangers to strengthen in a league season in which they remain unbeaten with only five games left.

But Steven Gerrard is on the verge of unlocking a transfer kitty that has on a different level to the one he has been operating under amid his team's Europa League exploits.

The last time the Premiership champions progressed to the Champions League group stage was Brendan Rodgers' Celtic side in 2018 who banked £32million for reaching the group stage before finishing third and landing in Europe's second tournament.

Rangers will enter in the champions playoff route and the league winner in 2022 will almost certainly go straight into the group stage. The stakes couldn't be higher.

The prize at stake was referenced by club legend and perennially-grinning pundit Kris Boyd before Glasgow's big two shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw on Sunday.

Boyd said: "Rangers are going to strengthen in the summer. They will bring in better quality as they have money to spend.

"It now becomes a £30million league for whoever wins it next season because of the Champions League. So Rangers will invest and bring better players in.

"So will Celtic because neither of these clubs can stand still."

The runners-up in the east end will also get a crack in the non champions route - largely down to Rangers' and Celtic's European efforts with the coefficient - and with a new chief executive, director of football and manager set to be installed you can expect plenty of investment over at Parkhead.

Last season's qualifiers didn't finish until September but this time around we should know well before the end of the transfer window in August if either club will be drinking from Europe's golden chalice in 2021-22.

Should Rangers manage to negotiate the required two qualifying rounds that will be their reward - and here's how they could spend it.

Goldson's new sidekick

Connor Goldson's place at the heart of the back four is pretty much non-negotiable.

Alongside James Tavernier he is a de facto second captain for the side and though the Ibrox team have been without their right-back in the last month they have not lost any leadership with Goldson assuming the armband.

A new-found range of pinpoint, route-one passing has helped Rangers break down defences when the more intricate stuff hasn't come off while his defensive efforts have been key to a backline set to smash all kinds of season records.

But could an improvement be made on Leon Balogun and Filip Helander alongside him?

Jack Simpson's arrival back in January proved Gerrard has identified the position as one that can be improved upon but the former Bournemouth man has found it difficult to dislodge the aforementioned trio.

And then there are the forgotten men - Nikola Katic has missed the entire season with a knee injury while George Edmundson's future is still up in the air as he continues a loan spell at Derby County.

New man in midfield

It has been one of Rangers' strengths this season. A midfield three in which there is very little disruption and every player knows their jobs.

Steven Davis is a strong player of the year candidate and the news over the weekend that he's signed a new deal at the club will go down well.

Father Time will catch up one day though, while Bongani Zungu has done little to merit a permanent transfer from Amiens.

Ditto Scott Arfield, who has stood out as much as anyone this term but is now 32.

An attack-minded midfielder in his mould - perhaps even in the mould of the revelatory David Turnbull on the other side of the city - could help them continue to set the pace.

Kent 2.0

Ryan Kent has one of the wide spots locked down and he's already recorded a double-figure return for goals AND assists this term in his best season at Ibrox to date.

On the right side of the attack, things are often a little murkier.

A right-winger is perhaps the most obvious area in which to strengthen as neither of the two stars who have retained that position are naturals out wide.

Ianis Hagi and Joe Aribo trade places in the starting XI from week to week and Gerrard may be keen on a little more stability with a marquee signing.

Someone with pace and an ability to attack defenders - almost a Kent for the opposite flank - would help massively.

That could allow the likes of Hagi and Aribo to be deployed centrally where many fans believe they are at their best.

Reinforcements up top

It's something that almost got lost in the hullabaloo of scooping title number 55.

But Alfredo Morelos' interview to Colombian radio in which he made clear his ambitions of a Premier League move should serve as a pointed reminder that, although he wears his heart on his sleeve and enjoyed the celebrations more than most, at some point down the line the love affair will end.

He said: "One of my big dreams is to play in the English Premier League. It is one of the best leagues in the world and there are a lot of important players and important teams.

"So if the opportunity presents itself in my career, I am going to take it."

There's also the advancing years of 38-year-old Jermain Defoe, who remains out of contract in the summer as it stands.

Cedric Itten and Kemar Roofe have been very good squad options since arriving on the same day at Ibrox but would either be ready to become the main man going into the title defence?
