4 draft-day trade scenarios for Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs made a handful of trades in the 2018 NFL draft, so why can’t they do the same in 2019?

We recently published the full 2019 NFL draft trade value chart so that you can be prepared for what some potential trades might look like on draft day. Now, here are a few examples of trades that the Chiefs could make during this month’s draft. Keep in mind, there’s no way of knowing what players will be available at these picks, but we can identify potential trade partners and what it will cost to make a trade ahead of the draft.

Trade 1:

Chiefs trade pick No. 29 and No. 63 (916 trade value)

Vikings trade pick No. 18, No. 190 and No. 250 (916 trade value)

Many fans are hoping for and predicting a trade up from Chiefs general manager Brett Veach. Plenty of teams should be looking to trade down in the draft because it’s a year that is supposed to be deep in the middle rounds.

A team like the Vikings could be a prime candidate to consider a trade down. They desperately need to update their interior offensive line, but if they can snag an extra pick in the process, it’d be a big win for them.

It’s unclear who the Chiefs might target in a trade up in this draft class, but if a top edge rusher or corner on their board is available toward the middle of the first round, you’d have to think they’d be calling each team to see if they’re willing to trade down.

Trade 2:

Falcons trade pick No. 45 and No. 79 (645 trade value)

Chiefs trade pick No. 29 and No. 216 (644.4 trade value)

This draft heralded as having a lot of value in the middle rounds. If the Chiefs are set on improving the defense and there isn’t an impact defender at No. 29 they feel is worth selecting, they shouldn’t press the issue. They should look for a partner and trade back in order to acquire more picks in the top 100.

In this particular trade scenario, the Chiefs would end up tying the Patriots with five draft picks in the top 100 selections. Veach can wait and get defenders at a better value instead of reaching in the first round of the draft. This wouldn’t be the sexy move that fans are hoping for, but it could end up being a smart move that pays off in the long run.

Trade 3:

Chiefs trade No. 61, No. 63, and 2020 6th-round pick (580 trade value)

Cardinals trade No. 33 (580 trade value)

Not all trades happen in the first round. Last year, the Chiefs traded up just a few spots in the second round to select Breeland Speaks. This would be quite the big trade up for the Chiefs, but it also would match the aggressive nature of Veach.

The Cardinals might be willing to move back and pick up a couple of extra draft picks to fill out the many needs on their roster. If there’s a player that Veach likes who drops to the second round, it might be imperative to move up in order to get him.

Why move up to the top of the second round, though? The Colts GM is former Chiefs director of football operations Chris Ballard, and they have the second pick on Day 2 of the draft. He could very well be targeting the same player.

Trade 4:

Chiefs trade No. 63 and No. 92 (408 trade value)

Browns trade No. 49 (410 trade value)

The Browns have just one draft pick in the top 100 after the Odell Beckham Jr. trade. If the Browns can slide down a few spots and pick up an extra pick, I think John Dorsey would gladly make the move, even if it means losing out on a point or two on the trade value chart.

Dorsey has already shown a willingness to work with the Chiefs, as evidenced by the swap of Emmanuel Ogbah and Eric Murray. If Veach wants to be selective in the second round, the Browns would be a good target for a trade up. In this scenario, the Chiefs would have two picks in the first 50 selections with the potential to add multiple impact players. They’d also still pick ahead of the Browns at No. 61, so there are no worries about Dorsey swiping someone the team might be targeting.
