It’s Saturday, which means we are back with our ninth edition of The Scouting Notebook.
The Scouting Notebook features prospects to keep an eye on when the majority of the college games take place. While some think it’s too early to talk about the 2020 NFL draft, there’s never a bad time to talk about the future of the Chargers.
With that being said, here are four prospects to watch for in Week 11.
WR Denzel Mims, Baylor, No. 15, 9:00 a.m. PT, FS1
The lack of depth at the wide receiver position has become evident due to the lack of production behind Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. Because of that, it’s almost certain that the Chargers will look to add another weapon in the offseason.
Mims, the 6-foot-3 and 215 pound wideout, would be perfect player to add to the roster. Overshadowed in the Big 12, Mims has been productive throughout his collegiate career. He has an outstanding blend of speed to beat defenders on vertical routes, size to bring down 50-50 balls and body control for finding the ball no matter where it is.
OT Jedrick Wills, Alabama, No. 74, 12:30 p.m. PT, CBS
Adding a starting caliber offensive tackle is a necessity for the Chargers, as we saw the Raiders terrorize them up front on Thursday. A few weeks ago, we mentioned his teammate, Alex Leatherwood, as an option but Wills is starting to generate first-round buzz, as well.
Wills isn’t technically refined as Leatherwood in the pass protection department, but he is a strong, physical tackle who is an adept run blocker and has the tools to be a well-rounded NFL offensive tackle with more nuance in his footwork.
Wills and Leatherwood will have a handful of pro scouts, most likely including the Chargers, in the biggest of the year as the Crimson Tide take on the No. 2 LSU Tigers.
CB Trevon Diggs, Alabama, No. 7, 12:30 p.m. PT, CBS
The Chargers haven’t used draft capital on a cornerback in quite sometime and they could elect to do that to add a talented player opposite of Casey Hayward. If Los Angeles is there to watch Alabama’s offensive tackles, there is a player worth keeping an eye on the other side of the ball.
Diggs, the 6-foot-2 and 200 pound Senior, leads the Tide with three interceptions and two fumble recoveries and has also broken up five passes and has 22 tackles. The converted wide receiver is a long and extremely smooth corner who has the foot quickness, physicality and length to constantly disrupt plays.
Today, he will be tasked with slowing down one of the nation’s best trios in Justin Jefferson, JáMarr Chase and Terrace Marshall.
DT Neville Gallimore, Oklahoma, No. 90, 5:00 p.m. PT, FOX
The Chargers will need to continue to build up the interior part of the defensive line, especially because the Brandon Mebane likely only has another season before hanging it up.
Since joining the Sooners, Gallimore has been an absolute force for their defensive line. He has amassed 5.5 tackles for loss and five sacks, along with two forced fumbles.
Gallimore has the first-step explosion, finesse and hands to get in the backfield, as well as the strength and balance to hold up against double teams. He would be a quality player that can play both the 1-technique and the 3-technique.
