The Arizona Cardinals are reportedly losing passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tom Clements to retirement. That leaves an opening on the coaching staff as the top offensive assistant to head coach Kliff Kingsbury.
Whether the Cardinals hire someone to hold the title of offensive coordinator or hold another title and act as the lead offensive assistant to Kingsbury like Clement did, they will need to replace him.
One thing is clear, though. Whoever comes on staff will not be the playcaller. Kingsbury will continue to do that, just as Kyle Shanahan does for the San Francisco 49ers and Sean McVay does for the Los Angeles Rams even though they now have offensive coordinators. It is just like when Bruce Arians was head coach. He called the plays.
While there have been no reports of interviews or interest, a number of coaches could make sense to fill Clements’ vacancy.
