4 position battles for starting jobs to watch for the Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals mostly have a starting lineup on offense and defense set, but not every spot is completely secured. Here are the starting jobs that will be a battle as minicamp takes place (sometime) and training camp begins later this summer.

RT: Marcus Gilbert vs. Justin Murray vs. Josh Jones

Cardinals Training Camp

Gilbert is the favorite to start, as he was the starter last year until he tore his ACL, he has the most experience and is arguably the best lineman they have.

However, his injury history screams at you that he can’t be trusted to be the guy, as he has only played 12 games in the last three seasons.

Murray gained the praise of his coach and general manager, while the team is super high on Jones, a steal in the third round of the draft. He wants to play right away.

This could be fun to watch.

Bullard was limited to nine games and six starts last season because of injury but he put up career numbers in that half a season. Allen’s season also ended prematurely because of an injury. They will battle for the third starting spot on the defensive line. It is also possible that rookies Leki Fotu and Rashard Lawrence could be in the mix. Fotu starting would move Corey Peters to defensive end instead of nose tackle.

ILB: De’Vondre Campbell vs. Isaiah Simmons

 Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

The Cardinals have a great problem in that they have many talented linebackers. Simmons is expected to make an impact. Campbell was their No. 1 free agent target. They play the same position. It might be difficult for Simmons to come off the field if he plays as well as he could.

At least initially, it looks like Campbell will be the base linebacker and Simmons will be a sub linebacker.

S: Jalen Thompson vs. Deionte Thompson

Robert Hanashiro-USA TODAY Sports

Jalen developed nicely during the second half of the season and is slated to start. However, Deionte looked promising coming out of Alabama. He is the perfect player for the position. Jalen has the edge but Deionte could make it interesting in training camp and the preseason.
