AHMEDABAD: Airport police have arrested four men who posed as customs officers and cheated Mohammad Shah Faisal Nazirhasan, a UP resident who arrived in the city from Saudi Arabia, of Rs 5.92 lakh.
The four arrested are Rutivik Rathod of Gandhinagar; and Shashikanth alias Sonu Tiwari, Prakash Mehariya, and Santosh Maurya of Ahmedabad.
The complainant stated that on June 7 he arrived in the city at about 3.10am. He said that after completing the formalities he came out of the airport. He had a bag containing dry fruits, a couple of mobile phones, and a 100g gold bar. He said another bag had gift articles.
Nazirhasan said that as he was trying to board an autorickshaw, he was approached by the three men of whom two had wireless sets. They identified themselves as customs officers. The three then took away the mobile phone which he was carrying. They rummaged through his bags and found the gold bar.
Nazirhasan said that the accused even checked the purse of his friend Artbul Ahad and took away Rs 20,000. Nazirhasan said that when his friend objected, the three threatened to file a case which would lead to an imprisonment of 10 years.
Since they were scared, Nazirhasan and his friend left the area and did not report the matter to police. Later Nazirhasan approached the authorities and identified the four accused from the airport’s CCTV footage. He lodged a complaint on Friday after which the four were arrested by Airport police. A case has been filed under IPC sections 392 (robbery), 170 (impersonating a public servant), and 114 (abettor present when an offence is committed).
