The Philadelphia Eagles were back on the field on Wednesday for the second day of mandatory minicamp and a few players stood out, namely a couple of young guys. With the final day of minicamp coming on Thursday, here are four notes from Wednesday’s session.
Arcega-Whiteside has a special skill
JJ Arcega-Whiteside might score six touchdowns as a rookie and they’ll all like come on jump ball situations like the one below. There’s being skilled as a football player and then there’s having an amazing skill. As a rookie, Arcega-Whiteside has the look and feel of a Randy Moss or DeAndre Hopkins when it comes to winning jump ball situations. He’s gotten reps with the first team and made a ton of plays look easy. Eagles WR coach Carson Walch lauded JJ Arcega-Whiteside for his footwork and he’s definitely making a name for himself.
Carson Wentz is going to take some chances in the red zone
Wentz was slinging the heat on Wednesday and his first two days of minicamp show that a clear indication that he’ll moments of Brett Favre gunslinging his way through a few drives. Wentz’s best throws of the day came in the red zone, and we can expect him to form dual relationships with Dallas Goedert and J.J. Arcega-Whiteside.
DeSean Jackson can still fly
Michael Vick once opened a game against the Washington Redskins by flinging a bomb to DeSean Jackson for a touchdown. Carson Wentz and Jackson could replicate such a feat when the two teams open up the season. Jackson opened up the Eagles’ first series of 11-on-11 series by hauling in a bomb from Carson Wentz to beat Rasul Douglas deep. If you’ve been under a rock all offseason, Jackson can still fly.
Avonte Maddox is going to be a star
Maddox doesn’t have a designated position at this point, but he’s been the one constant in the Eagles secondary unsure of what it’s depth chart will look like. A swiss army knife of a player, Maddox has been rotating first-team duties on the outside and the slot with Sidney Jones and could see time this season at corner, slot and free safety. Maddox continues to shine while Ronald Darby and Jalen Mills heal.
