4 interesting stats from Jets’ Week 8 loss to Jaguars

The Jets came out flat Sunday and lost in embarrassing fashion for the second consecutive week.

Adam Gase now has more career losses by double-digits than he has career wins after New York fell, 29-15, in Jacksonville. The Jets were overmatched, giving up big play after big play. The Jaguars took advantage of mental lapses in coverage as well as New York had two inexperienced middle linebackers patrolling the field.

The offense was inept again. Sam Darnold had an excellent bounce-back drive but struggled after that. The Jets’ inability to string consistent drives together, while their quarterback was running for his life the entire afternoon and continually turning over the football, pretty much summed up their entire season.

Now 1-6, here are four interesting stats from Week 8.

Coming off their Monday night embarrassment, the Jets answered in the best possible way with an opening drive touchdown.

The Jets had gone 30 straight games without an opening drive touchdown, but Sam Darnold methodically marched the offense down the field on a 12-play, 93-yard drive. Darnold was a perfect 7-7, throwing for 88 yards and a touchdown.

It was the Jets’ first opening-drive touchdown since October 2017. Everything went downhill from there, though.

Run, Fournette, Run!

On the second play from scrimmage, the Jaguars got 66-yard run from Leonard Fournette.

It was the longest run by an opposing running back that the Jets defense has allowed since 2014.

After being placed in great field position, Gardner Minshew found a wide-open Keelan Cole in the back of the end zone to take a 6-0 lead.

The Jets lead the NFL with five delay of game penalties on offense. While blame should fall at the foot of the quarterback and the offense, Adam Gase isn’t blameless. This isn’t his first rodeo, and his offense needs to be better prepared.

It’s already hard enough for the Jets to score. They can’t be taking penalties like this.

Big Play Jags

The Jets allowed a 60-yard rush and a 60-yard completion in the same game for the first time since Week 13 of 2017 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The difference? The Jets were competitive that day, matching score for score with the Chiefs. They even won, 38-31. Even though the Jets only won four games that season, the offense still picked up the defense.

That was certainly not the case in Jacksonville.
