A firefighter and three other people were injured in an apartment building fire in South Shore Monday night.

Just after 7 p.m., firefighters responded to a call in the 6900 block of South Clyde Avenue, and found the back of the building, including the stairwell, engulfed in flames, according to Chicago Fire Department Deputy Chief Frank Velez.

Firefighters entered the building and helped guide residents out to safety, he said.

Three adults were transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center with smoke inhalation, Velez said.

A firefighter injured a leg on the stairs and was taken to the hospital in good condition, he said.

The cause of the fire wasn’t immediately known.
