1. Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

  • Starting MSRP: $33,350 (Cars.com)

A hybrid vehicle is a great investment to keep fuel costs down, and Melanie Musson, an auto industry expert with AutoInsurance.org, said the Toyota RAV4’s hybrid model is also extremely comfortable: “The RAV4 Hybrid gets excellent fuel efficiency, especially in-town, thanks to the hybrid option. 2. Honda CR-V Hybrid

  • Starting MSRP: $35,630

The Honda CR-V Hybrid model is also a vehicle retirees can feel good about when it comes to both fuel cost and how the ride feels. “Hybrid options provide the perks of a gas engine for road trips, but the benefits of electric for around-town driving,” Musson said. “The CR-V has a well-made interior, free of creaks and squeaks that plague lower-quality vehicles.”

Sometimes the addition of CarPlay and other electronics inside can be confusing. Musson added that the electronic system inside is intuitive, so retirees don’t have to worry about a steep learning curve. “The touchscreen control panel is easy to navigate, helping retirees avoid frustration.”

3. Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid

  • Starting MSRP: $29,295

A hybrid SUV starting under $30,000 is already a stellar deal. Musson said the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid delivers a blend of affordability and style that is nearly unmatched. “For the price, it’s hard to find a more comfortable, well-built car that has the added perk of fuel efficiency you can only get with a hybrid.”

4. Kia Sportage Hybrid

  • Starting MSRP: $30,290

Doug Crawford, founder of Best Trade Schools LLC, recommended the Kia Sportage Hybrid model for its size and smooth ride. “The higher seat makes it easier to get in and out, and I know that is a feature sought by many people,” he explained. “The fuel economy is also easy on the pocketbook. A couple I know recently went to this model and [said] they appreciate the quiet compartment and heated seats during the chilly months.”
