While most of the major names available have been plucked off the free-agent market and the focus for teams is shifting to the upcoming NFL draft, there are still some valuable players out there to be signed.
Recently, I discussed several players for the Broncos to consider. Some of the players on that list have had their situations change, including Jeff Heuerman, who the Broncos decided to bring back.
In addition, T.J. Lang, a guard who was recently released by the Detroit Lions, appears ready to retire from football.
The Broncos don’t have a ton of cap space available and of that, they will need some to sign their incoming rookie class. Figures from the NFLPA say that the team has about $12,492,067 available, which is still enough to make a move or two.
Here are some players to consider at an affordable rate.
1. Danny Shelton, defensive tackle

It’s a bit surprising that Danny Shelton is still available.
The former first-round pick has been a bit of a disappointment in the early part of his career, but he was a key piece in the playoff run for the New England Patriots last season and is only 25 years old.
The Broncos need help in the middle of the defense at more than one position. Adding a player like Shelton should be considered to beef up the interior of the defensive line.
2. Domata Peko, defensive tackle

Thinking along those same lines, the Broncos could go the cheaper, older route of bringing Domata Peko back into the fold.
Peko is 34 years old but has been a solid player for the Broncos the past two seasons, particularly against the run. He played in 30 of 32 possible games for the Broncos over the last two years.
Ben Garland, offensive lineman

This would be a blast from the past as Ben Garland played for the Broncos for six seasons before becoming a serviceable starting offensive lineman for the Atlanta Falcons.
Garland was born in Colorado, so coming back to Denver would likely something he would be interested in doing. He’s still just 30 years old and could bring the experience he received in Atlanta, where he became a better overall player, to the team.
The Broncos need more depth along the offensive line. Garland would be an inexpensive veteran to add.
4. Zach Brown, linebacker

Zach Brown was on the last list and he’s still available. Why is that? Is he being selective and wanting to go to the right place for the right amount of money, or are teams just not that interested?
The Broncos’ biggest area of weakness is likely at the middle linebacker position. Not only could Brown help that problem, but he has the talent to be the best inside linebacker on the team.
If he could be signed to a short-term, affordable deal, the Broncos should be talking to him and his agent.
