4.8 Magnitude Earthquake Disrupts Northeast Air Travel Operations

Magnitude 4.8 earthquake in New York City

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake in the Northeast has caused disruptions in air travel, affecting several major airports in the region. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has reported that flights to New York Kennedy, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Newark airports are currently on hold.

Following the earthquake, the air traffic control tower at Newark Liberty airport was evacuated as a precautionary measure. Controllers were in the process of relocating to an alternate location, leading to the temporary suspension of flights in and out of the airport.

Controllers at LaGuardia airport were still allowing flights to depart, but runways at all affected airports were undergoing inspections for any potential damage caused by the earthquake.

FAA spokesperson Jeannie Shiffer described the situation as rapidly evolving, emphasizing the need for thorough runway inspections at New York's JFK and Newark airports before normal operations can resume.

Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for updates on flight schedules and potential delays due to the earthquake-related disruptions in air travel.
