4,500 jobs to go as Tesco announces changes to Metro stores

Thousands of Tesco Metro staff are set to lose their jobs as the supermarket giant announced its latest round of redundancies.

The company says it will "simplify and reduce processes and administrative tasks" at 153 stores, in a move which will affect about 4,500 people.

Among the changes to the Metro stores, which includes a branch at the intu Victoria Centre, will be a "leaner management structure" and fewer products being stored in back rooms.

Jason Tarry, UK and ROI CEO, said: "In a challenging, evolving retail environment, with increasing cost pressures, we have to continue to review the way we run our stores to ensure we reflect the way our customers are shopping and do so in the most efficient way.

"We do not take any decision which impacts colleagues lightly, but have to make sure we remain relevant for customers and operate a sustainable business now and in the future."

Tesco has also announced some changes in 134 of its Express stores, where customer footfall is lower.

These changes will include small reductions in opening hours during quieter trading periods.
