Saint-Maximin the star but Magpies lose again - Newcastle player ratings

It's now 11 games without a win for struggling Newcastle United after defeat to Leeds.

The Whites dominated the first half as United failed to muster any kind of response to last weekend's loss to Aston Villa.

Raphinha's early goal was just rewards but Newcastle did improve in the second half as Miguel Almiron struck their first goal in more than six hours.

That prompted hopes they could kick on but Jack Harrison's expertly taken goal was an immediate setback.

They piled on the pressure in the second half and Jonjo Shelvey's header clipped the bar but they couldn't find an equaliser as Bruce's woes went on. Here are Lee Ryder's player ratings.

Karl Darlow 6

On hand to make a couple of crucial claims but beaten by Leeds' only two efforts on target.

Isaac Hayden 6

Done his best at right-back. Big questions on positioning for Leeds' second goal.

Jamaal Lascelles 6

Had some good chances to get on the scoresheet. A better display from the skipper.

Fabian Schar 7

Returned to the field after two injuries and showed throughout he's up for the fight.

Jamal Lewis 6

Watched an effort skim the bar.

Jacob Murphy 6

Not a great return to the scene. Lost the ball for the opener but improved with a couple of crosses after that. Made way for Saint-Maximin.

Jonjo Shelvey 6

Had a great chance to equalise with a header. Better in the second half and had 64 touches overall.

Jeff Hendrick 4

Doesn't seem to be the answer in midfield.

Ryan Fraser 6

The Scottish winger was a genuine threat but is lacking fitness. Managed to get four crosses in overall.

Miguel Almiron 7

A well-taken equaliser and gave United some spark after the break.

Callum Wilson 6

Worked hard but nothing dropped for him where he likes it.

Subs

Allan Saint-Maximin 8 (for Murphy 64)

Turned the game on its head. He's been a miss and will need to find this form to keep Newcastle in the division.

Dwight Gayle (for Fraser 77)
