Pitiful performance sees more low marks - Newcastle player ratings

Newcastle were plunged deeper into trouble at the bottom of the Premier League as Steve Bruce's United future became more precarious.

United were simply not at the races after Bruce once again showed more fighting spirit in his press conference than his players did on the pitch.

An early Ollie Watkins goal was followed by a Bertrand Traore strike and United offered virtually nothing in reply as players trudged around aimlessly with no discernible plan.

There was a marginal improvement when Ryan Fraser and Allan Saint-Maximin entered the fray but this was desperate stuff again. Here's Lee Ryder's player ratings.

Karl Darlow 5

Made a couple of blocks in the second half but will be disappointed with two goals that flew past him.

Javier Manquillo 5

Pressed high up the pitch and made some good offensive contributions but Targett had joy down his flank. Sold a dummy for the second goal too.

Was booted off the park with a couple of crunch challenges by the end.

Jamaal Lascelles 4

Looks like he is getting fitter but struggled at times.

Fabian Schar 4

At fault for opening goal with sliced clearance.

Isaac Hayden 5

Started off well enough but couldn't prevent a defeat after stepping back into defence

Jamal Lewis 5

At least tried to create.

Jeff Hendrick 3

Anonymous.

Jonjo Shelvey 4

Failed to block cross that led to opening goal. Had plenty of touches but lacked purpose.

Miguel Almiron 5

Started off with a bit of intent but then got lost amid Newcastle's slump at Villa Park.

Callum Wilson 4

Didn't get much service but when the ball did come his way didn't inspire in final third

Andy Carroll 4

Had won his fair share in the air but lacked sharpness when it mattered. Hooked before the end.

Subs

Allan Saint-Maximin 6 (for Carroll 70)

Not fit but great to see him back.

Ryan Fraser 6 (for Manquillo 70)

Gave United some energy at least.

Dwight Gayle (for Almiron 80)
