3rd Test, Day 2: Umesh Yadav completes 100 wickets at home to trigger Australia collapse

NEW DELHI: Veteran Indian pacer Umesh Yadav became the 13th bowler to complete 100 wickets in India on Thursday. The old warhorse along with Ravichandran Ashwin triggered an Australian collapse in the morning session of the second day.

Australia were bowled out for 197 in their first innings of the third Test of the four-match series in Indore.

Starting the day 47 runs ahead of India, Australia ended up taking 88 runs first innings lead.

On a turning pitch, Umesh was the only pacer to take wickets in the first innings of both the teams. The pacer took three wickets in three overs in the second hour of the morning session and finished with figures of 3 for 12 in 5 overs. He now has 101 wickets in India from 31 Tests at an average of 24.53.

At one stage when Peter Handscomb and Cameron Green were out in the middle, it looked like the tourists would manage to secure a lead well in excess of 100-120 runs, which of course on a track which has produced some devilish spin could have well been a match winning lead.

But Team India managed to pull things back very well and restrict the Aussie lead to 88.

It was Ashwin (3 for 44) who started the collapse, by removing overnight batter Peter Handscomb (19) in the first over after the drinks break. Handscomb was caught at short leg by Shreyas Iyer.

When Handscomb fell the scoreboard read 186/5.

Umesh Yadav becomes fifth pacer to take 100 wickets in India

Till then, Australia had a good first hour on the second day as they added 30 runs in 16 overs without the loss of any wickets. But Ashwin and Umesh came together after the break and blew away the remaining six Aussie wickets for just 11 runs in 6.3 overs.

Umesh first trapped Cameron Green (21) LBW in his first over of the day, before getting Mitchell Starc in his next to complete his 100th wicket at home. He is the fifth India pacer to achieve the milestone after Kapil Dev (219), Javagal Srinath (108), Zaheer Khan (104) and Ishant Sharma (104).

Ashwin then dismissed Alex Carey for his second wicket, before Umesh got his third by uprooting the off-stump of Todd Murphy in the next over. Ashwin then clean bowled Nathan Lyon to wrap up the Australian innings.

Umesh and Ashwin ended up taking three Australian wickets each during the short period, after Ravindra Jadeja (4 for 78) took all the four Aussie wickets that fell on Day 1.
