Feb. 25--A third man has been charged in an armed robbery that left a tourist stabbed in October near Oak Street Beach, Chicago police said Wednesday.
Daniel Morales, 20, of the 4100 block of West 25th Place, was charged with armed robbery and a parole violation in the Oct. 24 stabbing of a tourist from Minneapolis, officials said. He appeared Wednesday at the Leighton Criminal Court Building, where he was ordered held without bail, according to court records.
Noe Mondragon, 22, was previously charged with aggravated battery and armed robbery and Luis Salgado-Camargo, 18, was previously charged with armed robbery.
The three allegedly approached the tourist, Neil McCarthy, then 27, and his girlfriend in the 1100 block of North Lake Shore Drive about 11:50 p.m. and demanded their property, officials said.
McCarthy chased and tackled one of the suspects after tracking down his stolen iPhone, according to police and the couple.
In October, Judge James Brown set bail at $950,000 for Mondragon, of the 4100 block of South Artesian Avenue, and $500,000 for Salgado-Camargo, 18, of the 4100 block of West 25th Street, officials said.
McCarthy and his girlfriend, who was 26 at the time of the attack, were heading back to their hotel about 11:50 p.m. after spending the evening at Navy Pier and along North Michigan Avenue. They said McCarthy is a former member of the Royal Air Force.
The couple said three men surrounded them and demanded their money and belongings near Oak Street Beach, police said.
"Mondragon produced a knife, and when the male victim tried to protect his girlfriend, a struggle ensued and the male victim was stabbed,'' prosecutors said at the earlier bond hearing for Morales' co-defendants.
McCarthy eventually got the knife away from Mondragon, and Mondragon also suffered a knife wound during the struggle, officials said.
