3D printer to be sent to space for human organ trials

3D printer to be sent to space for human organ trials

A 3D printer that may be able to produce human tissue and organs is due to be sent to the International Space Station after a disastrous first attempt in October.

The Russian company, 3D Bioprinting Solutions, was the first to successfully transplant a printed thyroid gland into a mouse and aims to do the same for humans.

To be able to print complex tissues that are more similar to those in human bodies, scientists say they need to send a 3D printer to space. The first effort to send a printer to the International Space Station failed in October when a Soyuz spacecraft crashed shortly after launch.

Al Jazeera's Step Vaessen reports from Moscow.
