Coronavirus in Scotland: 38 carers and 43 drivers have died from Covid-19 since start of pandemic

Thirty eight carers in Scotland have died as a result of coronavirus since the start of the pandemic, figures released by the National Records of Statistics (NRS) have confirmed.

They published information breaking down covid-related deaths according to occupation of those who lost their lives between March 1 and 30 November last year.

The figures confirm that in that period there were a total of 350 deaths of people aged between 20 and 64, in which Covid-19 was noted as an underlying or contributory cause.

The 38 carer deaths involved Scots working in 'caring personal service occupations' - which includes for nursing auxiliaries, nursery nurses and (non-paramedic) ambulance staff as well as care workers.

A further 47 deaths occurred among Scots working in 'elementary administration and service occupations', which includes professions such as postal workers and couriers, shelf fillers, waiters and waitresses, security guards, cleaners and refuse collectors.

And 43 deaths were listed among Scots listed as 'transport and mobile machine drivers and operatives' - which includes for taxi, van, truck and bus drivers and construction operatives.

The figures also confirm that 30 Social care workers in Scotland have died of Covid-19 since the pandemic began, as well as 16 health care workers and 20 Scots employed in sales roles.

According to the NRS, as of January 3, a total of 6,686 deaths had been registered in Scotland where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

And the statistics for December 28 to  January 3 showed that 75% of the 183 deaths registered in the latest week were of people aged 75 and over, and 8% were aged under 65.
