372 new flats to be built in Baltic, Smithdown and Anfield areas

Hundreds of flats across Liverpool were given the go ahead this morning.

The council's planning committee approved a series of applications that could see a total of 372 flats built in the Baltic Triangle, off Smithdown Road and on Walton Breck Road close to Anfield Stadium.

The Baltic Triangle flats were approved last year, one of a series of plans that have been approved for the site in recent years, with the committee only approving minor changes to the application.

It is set to see five buildings between four and eight storeys built on Grafton Street, close to Cains Brewery.

Responding to a question from committee member Malcolm Kennedy about the progress and completion of the scheme, a representative of applicant YPG said work on the flats had already started according to the plans that we approved last year and that the changes related to areas of the development where work was yet to begin.

He said: "We have made a significant start on the site in relation to the original approved scheme from 2016. Blocks A and D, which face on to Grafton Street have foundations and the majority of the structural steelwork in place.

"At the moment there are concrete slabs being poured on site in relation to these two blocks so we have made a significant start on site and excavations are almost complete on the remainder of the site so it has been progressing."

The Smithdown Road flats are set to be built on an area of land near Penny Lane Emporium that has been empty since the 1990s.

Penny Lane Property is set to build two four storey blocks with a total of 34 apartments on the site.

The move was supported by ward councillor Laura Roberton-Collins, who wrote in a submission to the committee that it would help improve a long derelict site which contains a walkway connecting Smithdown Road and Penny Lane Shopping Centre.

The plans for Anfield would see applicant Anfield Developments build 48 flats on the corner of Walton Breck Road and Burleigh Road South, with space for two commercial units as well.
