PALAKKAD: As many as 363 wild boars that had destroyed agriculture crops were killed in the three forest divisions of the district in the past three months, said forest department officials on Thursday.
The maximum number of wild boars were killed in Ottapalam forest range, 156. Fifteen more applications to kill the wild boars are pending before the department, the officials said.
As many as 241 wild boars were killed in Palakkad forest division; 74 in Nemmara division and 48 in Mannarkkad division.
The officials said that the attack of wild boars came down in the areas where they were killed recently by the forest department. The shooters with gun licence have been empanelled for the purpose, they said.
Meanwhile, the Desheeya Karshaka Samajam has demanded the government to give unconditional permission for farmers to kill wild boars, which have become a big menace in forest fringes of the district.
The executive committee meeting of the samajam said that the farmers were unable to cultivate crops because they were being destroyed by the wild boars.
Though the government had given permission to kill the wild boars, the stringent provisions put forward by the government for killing wild boars have put farmers in dire straits.
As per the government order issued in March this year, the farmers should have a licensed gun and they should adhere to a number of other legal conditions to shoot down the boars.
