36% of Andhra Pradesh returnees from GCC countries had passport, visa confiscated: Survey

The survey has found that these migrants were lured by agents and granted work through illegal channels.

This leaves them prone to exploitation. In a bid to understand the problems faced by migrant workers in Gulf countries, APNRTS conducted a comprehensive survey on migrant returnees from GCC and South East Asia countries.

Of the 50,944 returnees, close to 40% of them had returned from Kuwait, 25% from UAE, 9 % from Qatar and other GCC countries.

The survey revealed that 54% of the migrants had educational qualification of class 10 or below while graduates and degree holders constitute 25%.

"Unskilled and semi-skilled migrant workers are largely involved in low category domestic works such as house maids, cooks, bearers and gardeners at houses, shops, farms ."
