36 more North East coronavirus deaths as England total rises by 765

A further 36 people have died in the North East after contracting coronavirus.

A total of 765 deaths were reported by NHS England on Thursday afternoon, taking the total number of Covid-19 related fatalities in the country to 7,248.

A spokesperson for NHS England said the patients were aged between 24 and 103 years old.

Some 43 of the 765 patients had no known underlying health condition. They were all aged between 33 and 99.

Of the 765 new hospital deaths, 140 occurred on April 8 while 568 took place between April 1 and April 7.

The remaining 57 deaths occurred in March, including two on March 19 and one on March 16

In the North East, there were 16 deaths reported by the South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, the highest in the region.

It means a total of 105 deaths have now been reported at the trust, one of a total of 18 NHS trusts in England to have announced at least 100 deaths to date.

Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear - 1

Gateshead - 0

Northumbria - 6

South Tyneside and Sunderland - 16

The new figures come as ministers raised the prospect of Britain's coronavirus lockdown extending beyond three weeks, as Boris Johnson spent a third night in intensive care.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, who is deputising for the Prime Minister, was due to chair a Cobra emergency committee on Thursday to discuss the lockdown measures with leaders of the devolved nations.
