34 more North East coronavirus deaths as England death toll passes 10,000

Thirty-four more people have died in the North East after contracting coronavirus.

A total of 667 deaths were reported by NHS England on Sunday afternoon, taking the total number of Covid-19 related fatalities in the country to 10,261.

NHS England confirmed the latest victims were aged between 17 and 98 - including 40 with no underlying health conditions.

In the North East, there were 13 deaths reported by the South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, the highest in the region once again, while there were five deaths in County Durham.

The latest figures from NHS England come as it was revealed Prime Minister Boris Johnson tested negative for Covid-19 before being discharged from hospital a week after being admitted with persistent symptoms.

The Prime Minister said: "It is hard to find the words to express my debt to the NHS for saving my life."

In a video message, he said "the efforts of millions of people across this country to stay home are worth it", adding: "Together we will overcome this challenge, as we have overcome so many challenges in the past."
