£33m funding to support West Midlands brownfield housing developments

West Midlands Combined Authority has secured £33 million of new government funding to drive forward plans for 7,500 homes on brownfield land.

The fresh round of capital is the second it has received from the Brownfield Housing Fund which is aimed at unlocking industrial land for residential redevelopment.

Altogether £84 million from this pot has been earmarked by the Government for the combined authority over a three-year period, with the aim of unlocking 7,500 new homes across the region.

The regional council has set itself a target of building 215,000 new homes in the West Midlands by 2031.

This new round of £33 million will be focused on site clearance and remediation of difficult-to-deliver brownfield sites including the restoration and conversion of heritage buildings into new homes and mixed-use developments around key transport hubs.

West Midlands Mayor Andy Street said: "This fresh injection of £33 million from the Brownfield Housing Fund is a huge vote of confidence in the West Midlands and our ability to deliver on our promises.

"Developing homes and creating new communities on brownfield land has been one of the region's real success stories of recent years and we will now be able to keep up our momentum thanks to this latest funding.

"By using government cash to clean-up derelict industrial land, we've helped create thousands of new homes and jobs while also protecting our precious and irreplaceable greenbelt."

This funding announcement is the latest in a series of awards, including the £350 million Housing Deal for the West Midlands housing delivery programme.
