£335k plans to make major Leeds junction better for buses, cyclists and pedestrians

A busy junction in Leeds is set to see improvement works to make it more accessible to pedestrians and buses.

Leeds City Council is proposing improvement works worth around £335,000 to help create pedestrian and cycle crossings, as well as extra bus lanes around the A647/A6120 Dawson’s corner junction.

A report from council officers claims the juntion is currently ‘inadequate’ for pedestrians and cyclists, with many having to take ‘convoluted routes around the junction’ in order to cross the road.

As part of the changes, new pedestrian and cycle crossing facilities would be provided on all the roads to tie in with the completion of Leeds-Bradford Cycle Superhighway.

On the A647 Bradford Road, bus lanes would be installed in both directions with a bus gate to give priority to eastbound buses.

On the A6120 Ring Road, the road would be widened to accommodate additional lanes of traffic to and from the junction, while a pedestrian route to the west of the A6120 Ring Road will also be widened to include a shared pedestrian and cycle route.

A bus lane on the B6157 Bradford Road on the westbound approach to the junction with some carriageway widening to improve the junction layout.

The A647 Stanningley Bypass would be widened to include extra lanes to and from the junction with structural works undertaken over the Wood Nook Tunnel.

The report claims the changes would reduce peak hour bus delays at the junction and to reduce journey time, as well as reducing air pollution caused by standing traffic. It is hoped that full planning approval would be granted in January 2021.
