31 January 1948: Mahatma Gandhi dies

Gandhi was always opposed to the partition of his country into India and Pakistan: "Before partitioning India, my body will have to be cut into two pieces." The prospect of civil war made him relent and he asked the Congress Party to accept it. As the country turned more violent he went on hunger strike to protest about it and to get India to hand back the 550m rupees which belonged to Pakistan. His killer, Nathuram Godse, felt this was a betrayal of India.
