31 countries where UK travellers are banned or face strict restrictions to enter

With Omicron cases escalating every day in Scotland and the rest of the UK, some countries have reconsidered letting in British travellers without restrictions.

There are 30 countries around the world that have enacted travel restrictions against UK travellers, reports The Mirror.

Coronavirus figures are staggering in the UK due to the highly infectious Omicron variant.

In fact, the UK broke its daily case record three days in a row last week. The record for daily infections now sits at 93,045 cases.

Scotland is in the midst of a Covid wave due to Omicron - the new variant accounts for almost two thirds of cases (63.9 percent) whilst 13.4 percent of new Covid tests are positive.

As a result, a number of countries in Europe and around the world have introduced restrictions for UK travellers.

Austria is considering implementing quarantines for British travellers.

Austrian newspaper Kronen Zeitung reported that the UK, as well as Denmark and the Netherlands, could be classified as 'virus variant areas' due to Omicron cases.

Plans for Brits hoping to hit the popular ski destination could be axed if a quarantine makes a holiday unviable.

Germany

New rules introduced on Sunday evening in Germany classify the UK as a virus variant area of concern, the highest Covid risk level that the country has.

The decision was taken on Saturday when the UK once again broke its daily case record.

Travellers to Germany from the UK will now have to prove a negative test and quarantine for two weeks, regardless of vaccination status.

France

France has restricted all but essential travel for UK travellers (PA)

France introduced new restrictions against UK travellers on Friday, December 17.

Under the new rules there will be a requirement for an 'essential' reason to travel to France from the UK.

The French government clarified this in a statement saying "people cannot travel for touristic or professional reasons."

India

India also recently introduced new restrictions for UK travellers, including a test on arrival at Indian airports, followed by seven days of home quarantine.

You must then take a day eight test before self-monitoring your health for another seven days and going back into quarantine if necessary.

Australia

Australia has kept its borders closed for the duration of the pandemic including to UK travellers, only granting entry to its citizens, permanent residents, immediate family members of citizens or permanent residents, and fully vaccinated holders of eligible visas.

China

China has been one of the countries with the strictest covid rules with officials desperate to avoid any spikes in infections.

A ban remains on foreign travellers, including those from the UK.

New Zealand

Only UK travellers deemed to have a 'critical purpose' to travel are allowed to enter New Zealand.

Border restrictions are scheduled to start easing in February, but this could soon be put on hold due to the sudden and rapid spread of the Omicron variant around the world.

Japan

Having already had strict rules for foreign travellers, Japan has shut down travel entirely to non-citizens in response to the Omicron variant.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said: "These are temporary, exceptional measures that we are taking for safety's sake until there is clearer information about the Omicron variant."

South Korea

Travellers from the UK to South Korea are required to stay in a quarantine hotel for 14 days, effectively ruling out all but essential travel.

Guests are banned from leaving their rooms for the duration of their stay which will cost around £75 a day with meals and essential items provided.

Israel

Israel shut all its borders to non-Israeli citizens in response to the spiralling Omicron outbreak until at least December 29.

The country had only just reopened to foreign tourists weeks before the border was shut once again.

Returning Israeli citizens will be required to quarantine with the length depending on vaccination status.
