£300m waste to energy plant now sits with Secretary of State for decision

A decision on a new £300 million waste to energy plant on the Humber now sits with the Secretary of State.

The planning inspectorate has issued its recommendation report for South Humber Bank Energy Centre, brought forward by EP Waste Management Ltd.

The 95MW plant would be built on land that forms part of the site of parent company EP UK Investments' gas-fired South Humber Bank Power Station.

It was acquired from Centrica in 2017.

Submitted in April 2020, the company is looking to almost double the capacity of original plans that were consented by North East Lincolnshire Council.

The subsequent uplift from 49MW saw it escalate to a nationally-significant project.

Located off Hobson Way, Stallingborough, a total of 55 permanent jobs would be created if approved, with 600 at peak construction.

It sits opposite land already consented for Velocys’ Altalto Immingham green jet fuel refinery, another project aiming to use waste as a feedstock.

The Czech-owned entity stressed prior to submission that other than additional works no changes are proposed to the maximum building dimensions and fuel throughput that were approved by the initial planning permission granted in April 2019.

Business and Energy Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng has three months to make the decision, with the recommendation kept confidential until that is made.
