NEW DELHI: A 30-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly supplying weapons to gangsters in south Delhi, police said on Sunday. Acting on a tipoff, Delhi Police’s special cell arrested Nazim Ali from east Delhi’s Ghazipur on Thursday.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Jasmeet Singh, the accused had been on the run for last three months after his role came to fore in two cases, including a murder in south Delhi’s Lala Lajpat Rai Marg where a man was shot by two bike-borne assailants last year.
Special cell had been receiving information about Ali's whereabouts for few weeks, police said, adding surveillance was upped, raids conducted and he was finally arrested. A team led by inspectors Shiv Kumar and Pawan Kumar from the southern range tracked him down, the DCP said.
Ali told police that he was in touch with many criminals from Delhi and NCR and took orders on Whatsapp. He did not deal with criminals directly but took the referral route to evade arrest. He bought weapons from arms manufacturers in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh at a low rate and sold them at higher prices, police said.
Ali, a resident of Hapur in Uttar Pradesh, was earlier arrested in cases involving possession of illegal weapons.
During interrogation, it was found that he was involved in an incident of gang rivalry on November 1. Two bike borne persons had fired several bullets on their rival, killing him at the spot. Ali had supplied weapons to the co-accused in this incident.
