30 Rock returns for one-hour special

30 Rockis set to return for a one-off special on US network NBC.

Described as a “first-of-its kind all-audience upfront event” by the broadcaster, the hour-long episode will serve as a promo for forthcoming NBCUniversal programming, but will still feature the 30 Rock characters in a new story.

Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Tracy Morgan, Jane Krakowski and Jack McBrayer are among the cast members who will reprise their roles from the acclaimed sitcom.

“We’re all happy to have this excuse to (remotely) work together again for NBC,” said executive producers Fey and Robert Carlock, in a joint statement. “To quote Kenneth the Page, there are only two things we love in this world: television and everyone.”

Due to the ongoing restrictions stemming from the coronavirus pandemic, the special will be filmed remotely.

30 Rock ran from 2006 to 2013, and focused on the exploits of Liz Lemon (Fey), the head writer of a Saturday Night Live-esque sketch show. Baldwin played Jack Donaghy, her suave Republican boss, and Morgan and Krakowski played the sketch show’s diva-ish stars.

The series won acclaim for its fast-paced humour and high-profile guest stars, which included Matt Damon, David Schwimmer, Jennifer Aniston, Elizabeth Banks, Michael Keaton, Bryan Cranston and Robert De Niro.

Linda Yaccarino, chairman of advertising and partnerships at NBCUniversal, said: “At NBCUniversal, we’re excited to produce an upfront that reflects a new reality and celebrates our relationship with viewers and advertisers alike.”

“Historically, this event is about the future of programming; this year, it’s about the future of our industry – a future where we can meet audiences wherever they are, with the stories that move them.”
