30 reasons anyone visiting Leeds for the first time will be blown away

We know we're preaching to the converted here but Leeds isn't just a great place to live, it's a great place to visit.

Since you're unlikely to be going abroad this summer a city break is in order.

And not all city breaks are created equal.

Sure, you could go to London but it's expensive, unfriendly, overcrowded and everything is ludicrously far apart.

Leeds, on the other hand, has everything you need for a staycation within a relatively small area.

It's got great food and drink, buzzing nightlife, intriguing culture and plenty of cheap and free stuff for the budget-conscious.

Here are 30 reasons, divided into seven categories, as suggested by Visit Leeds, the city's official tourism board.

Food

1) Leeds has the UK's first dedicated independent food festival.

2) It's got a Michelin starred restaurant The Man Behind the Curtain.

3) If that's too fancy, Leeds has a bunch of street food markets including Chow Down.

4) There's Kirkgate Market, the largest covered market in Europe.

5) And there are food tours too.

Adventure

6) Spot feathery friends on Leeds Owl Trail with 25 sculptures nestled on buildings around the city.

7) Discover the exotic flora and fauna of Tropical World.

8) Then check out Roundhay Park outside.

9) Explore Leeds' Victorian streets at Abbey House Museum.

10) Or uncover the grisly side of historic healthcare at Thackray Medical Museum.

Countryside

11) Leeds is only a short drive or train ride from the Yorkshire Dales, one of Britain's National Parks.

12) Check out the Bronte village of Haworth and the surrounding Bronte country.

13) Hike up Ilkley's famous Cow and Calf rocks.

14) Cycle the route of the Tour de Yorkshire.

Culture

15) Leeds has nationally renowned opera and dance companies.

16) It has historic theatres such as The Grand and City Varieties Music Hall.

17) The city has outstanding music venues such as the O2 Academy and the First Direct Arena which attract the biggest names in music and entertainment.

18) Leeds has a great film festival.

19) Not to mention the International Concert Season for fans of classical music.

20) And the famous West Indian Carnival.

Museums

21) A great place to start is Leeds City Museum, with collections that span prehistoric bones to Leeds United memorabilia.

22) There's a huge collection of weapons and armour at the Royal Armouries.

23) There's a mixture of classical and modern art at Leeds Art Gallery.

24) And there are cutting-edge modern art collections at the Henry Moore Institute next door. Both galleries are free to visit.

Getting around

25) It's pretty easy to get to Leeds; it's two hours on the train from Kings Cross, London and less than an hour from Manchester, Sheffield or York.

26) You can fly into the city from Leeds Bradford Airport and catch one of the regular shuttle buses into the city centre.

27) Leeds public transport isn't great compared to other British cities, particularly down south. But Leeds' compact size means most places are within walking distance.

Shopping

28) Leeds has one of the best retail offerings in the UK. Try the famous Victoria Quarter, full of high-end shops in spectacular, original Victorian arcades.

29) Or for a more modern, luxury experience, there's the new Victoria Gate shopping centre.

30) And for something independent and different try the Corn Exchange.
