30 people missing and hundreds of homes destroyed as floods strike northern India

  • Dozens of people are feared dead and 30 are missing in India's Himachal Pradesh state following severe flash floods, cloudbursts, and landslides.
  • A search operation, including drones and 250 personnel from various response forces, is underway to locate the missing people.
  • Since last week, the region has experienced 23 flash floods, 16 landslides, and 19 cloudbursts, resulting in at least 80 deaths since 20 June.
  • Hundreds of homes, shops, roads, and bridges have been destroyed or washed away, with over 240 roads currently shut, particularly in the worst-hit Mandi district.
  • The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow warning for continued heavy rainfall, raising concerns about further devastation, with experts linking the increased intensity of monsoons to the climate crisis.
