For the final 30 days leading up to the start of Seattle Seahawks training camp, we will be counting down the 30 most important players on the roster heading into the 2019 season.
The Seattle Seahawks were absolutely thrilled to see receiver DK Metcalf, who many felt was a top-15 draft pick, fall all the way to the final pick of the second round.
GM John Schneider got on the phone and got himself that pick, securing the rights to the tantalizingly big and fast receiver out of Ole Miss.
Questions remain about Metcalf’s ability to run routes other than a go-route, which is a straight sprint down the field. However, coach Pete Carroll and some of Metcalf’s new teammates, including Russell Wilson and Tyler Lockett, don’t share those concerns.
In fact, they see Metcalf as an emerging star.
“I think DK is looking really, really special,” Wilson commented during minicamp. “He can do anything and everything and he’s tremendous.”
“I mean, he’s big and he’s fast,” added coach Carroll. “He’s got really good feet, you know, and his catching range was exhibited today for a start. And you know, we’ve got to figure it out, figure out where it is, maybe even more unique than we thought coming in. So we just develop it as we go. But big and really fast and the catching range was really obvious today.”
Metcalf is perhaps the most interesting player to watch when Seahawks training camp gets started on July 25. How he adjusts to the NFL game, and his ability to change direction, will be a huge part of Seattle’s success this season – their first without star wideout Doug Baldwin since 2010.
