Abuja: Nigerian police confirmed 30 local people were killed in recent deadly attacks on two neighboring villages in the country's central Plateau state.

Alfred Alabo, the spokesman for the police in Plateau, said in a statement that at least five suspects in connection with the attacks have so far been arrested, as more policemen have been deployed to the Fungzai and Kubat villages in the Mangu local government area of the state, following the overnight attacks by gunmen late Monday.

Alabo said the police are still hunting down other gunmen on the run.

The police received and responded to a distress call from one of the nearby villages to Fungzai and Kubat late Monday about gunmen who were shooting sporadically at local residents, the police spokesperson said.

Due to the superior firepower of the security operatives, the gunmen abandoned four motorcycles, a minivan, and some items used for their nefarious activities, he added.

In light of the alarming situation, the Plateau state government on Tuesday declared a 24-hour curfew in the affected areas, with an aim to restrict movement and ensure the safety of residents. (UNI)
