30 homeless people forced outside as Dublin hostel at Amiens Street evacuated overnight due to suspected gas leak

Thirty homeless people were left on the streets after a hostel on Amiens Street was evacuated due to a "suspected gas leak".

The Inner City Helping Homeless mobile unit aided the Dublin Regional Homeless Executive in making sure that people had a replacement roof over their head for the night.

Anthony Flynn of ICHH said that as many as 30 people were forced onto the streets with their belongings following the evacuation.

He said: "Hostel facility has been evacuated in Dublin Central. ICHH are working with DCC to make sure beds are reassigned to all who were in the facility [with a] suspected gas leak.

"ICHH staff are on-site and working with DCC at present. This building is ran by a private operator."

"One of our mobile units was on site and residents of the hostel were provided with alternative accommodation and are making their way there now.

"Big questions must be asked about how fit for purpose the building is? It's run by a private operator, were proper building checks done?"

Later on, while praising the work done by the charity overnight, he said that the building was not fit for purpose.

He added: "Well done for the immediate plan in place. Building was recently CONDEMNED not for for purpose! Immediate investigation."
