3 wounded when gunman opens fire on Chicago bus, police say

CHICAGO _ A gunman opened fire on a Chicago Transit Authority bus Monday evening, leaving three people wounded, two of them seriously, authorities said.

The shooting occurred on a northbound No. 75 bus in the 7700 block of South State Street in the Chatham neighborhood just before 6:20 p.m., police said.

Police said a 35-year-old man was getting off the bus when he suddenly pulled a handgun and opened fire. The gunfire hit an 18-year-old man in the chest, arm and stomach and an 18-year-old woman in the underarm, police said.

Both were taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, according to the Chicago Fire Department. The man was listed in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds and the woman was listed in fair-to-serious condition, a fire spokesman said.

A 59-year-old man was also grazed on his left side. He self-transported to St. Bernard Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, police said.

No other injuries were reported on the bus, which had multiple witnesses on board during the shooting, according to police.

Police initially said the shooting was a result of an argument between the gunmen and two other passengers but later updated their statement, saying it was unclear what led to the shooting.

The gunman initially managed to escape the bus but was later taken in as a person of interest and was being questioned by investigators, authorities said.

At the scene, several bullet holes could be seen in the rear passenger side window of the No. 75 bus, as police evidence technicians culled items from the halted bus and CTA personnel gathered nearby.

CTA officials temporarily rerouted eastbound and westbound traffic on the bus route as police continued their investigation.
