3 ways the Steelers offense needs to change in 2019

Most of the focus this offseason has been on how the Pittsburgh Steelers can improve on defense, and rightfully so. The Steelers’ defense didn’t live up to expectations and despite a huge season by the offense, the team didn’t achieve its goals.

Next season, the Steelers’ offense is going to have to learn to live life without wide receiver Antonio Brown. For all his antics, it’s impossible to ignore the level of production Pittsburgh will need to replace in his absence. So what changes need to happen on the offensive side of the football to keep things humming along?

Run the football

The Steelers ranked 31st in rushing yards and attempts last season. Was it because they didn’t have a capable running back? Nope. Perhaps the offensive line was in disarray? Nope. It all came down to head coach Mike Tomlin and offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner lacking confidence in James Conner and the run game. This has to change this season. Commitment to a more balanced offense is the only way to not let the opposition focus too heavily on the passing attack.

Utilize the tight ends

When the Steelers do throw the ball, there needs to be more emphasis on the tight ends. Vance McDonald has proven he can be a reliable receiving option. He was fourth on the team last season with 50 receptions and will need to be an even bigger part of the offense this season.

More play action

For a team with so many weapons, it is remarkable how little the Steelers utilize play action. Even when Le’Veon Bell was in the backfield, Pittsburgh did very little to try to disguise the offense and generate big plays through play action passing.
