3 things to know about new Jets return man Quadree Henderson

The Jets claimed ex-Giants return specialist Quadree Henderson off waivers on Friday afternoon.

Henderson was an All-American return man at the University of Pittsburgh and saw time with both the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers before being claimed by the Jets. Now, Gang Green is hoping he can compete to be Andre Roberts’ replacement.

Let’s get to know the Jets’ newest addition to the special teams unit.

Led the FBS in Return Yards

Quadree Henderson led the FBS in 2016 with 1,166 total return yards. His 15.8 yards per punt return and 30.5 yards per kick return were good enough for third and fifth in the country, respectively.

Henderson did not enjoy the same success as a returner in 2017 but was named second-team All-ACC. His returning abilities allowed him to get a 2018 NFL Scouting Combine invite, which helped get him into an NFL camp last season.

Henderson signed with the Steelers as an undrafted free agent following the commencement of the 2018 NFL draft.

He served as the Steelers’ primary returner during training camp and the preseason before Pittsburgh acquired Ryan Switzer from the Oakland Raiders.

Henderson was released during final cuts and signed to the Giants practice squad a month later. Henderson averaged 7.6 yards on nine punt returns and 22.4 yards on five kick returns before his season ended with a shoulder injury.

Top Overall Prospect in Delaware

In high school, Henderson was considered to be the best overall prospect in the state of Delaware by ESPN and Rivals.

Henderson was selected to first team All-Delaware Interscholastic Football Coaches Association at three different positions—wide receiver, defensive back and returner. He was named the No. 21 all-purpose back in the nation. As a three-star recruit, Henderson chose Pittsburgh over schools like Clemson, Boston College, West Virginia, Nebraska and Temple.
