3 things to know about new Jets OL coach Frank Pollack

The Jets offensive line needs a lot of work this offseason before Frank Pollack gets the chance to coach the unit up.

Pollack was named the Jets’ offensive line coach when Adam Gase finalized his staff last week. He came over from Cincinnati, where he was the offensive line coach for one season.

With that being said, let’s get to know the man who will responsible for building a wall around Sam Darnold.

Coaching experience

Pollack has been coaching in the NFL for over 10 years and is one of the league’s well respected assistants.

He began his coaching career in college at Northern Arizona as the offensive line coach in 2005. Pollack only spent two seasons there before making the jump to the NFL in 2007 with the Texans. In Houston, he served as the assistant offensive line coach from 2007-2011.

Pollack received a promotion from the Raiders in 2012 when he was named their offensive line coach. However, he was only in Oakland for a year and then fled to Dallas in 2013 as the assistant offensive line coach. Pollack was an assistant for two seasons until he was upgraded to the head man of the offensive line. He left for Cincinnati in 2018, but only coached for one season there.

Drastic improvement under Pollack

The Bengals were deemed to be one of the league’s worst offensive line’s last season, but Pollack guided them in the right direction.

Cincinnati saw drastic improvement in the running game under Pollack. Bengals running backs averaged 4.69 yards per attempt, their most since 1989. It was the biggest jump from one season to another in franchise history.

The Jets struggled in the running game last season, so Pollack could make an instant impact with that category. Of course, who will make up New York’s backfield remains to be seen.

The 51-year-old coach spent his fair share of time in the NFL as a player.

Pollack was drafted in the sixth round out of Northern Arizona by the 49ers in 1990. He was in San Francisco for two seasons, but never started a game. Pollack was then in Denver in 1993, but never played in a game. He returned to the Bay Area with the 49ers in 1994 and spent the rest of his career there.

He started in six games for his entire career.
