The Philadelphia Eagles moved on from wide receiver Shelton Gibson, waiving the talented but inconsistent player that they drafted just two seasons ago. With the open roster spot, the Birds added former Wisconsin Badgers cornerback Sojourn Shelton.
Shelton has spent time previously with the Bengals and Cardinals.
With Eagles fans likely not knowing much about the talented cornerback, here are three things to know about Shelton:
1. Shelton comes with accolades
The former Wisconsin Badgers star was first-team All-Big Ten at Wisconsin in 2016 before going undrafted in 2017. He’s a Florida kid and attended Plantation High School in Plantation, Florida. As a senior, he was rated as a four-star recruit and the 27th best cornerback in the nation and chose the Badgers over Florida State, Ole Miss, and West Virginia. In 2013, during his first season with the Badgers, Shelton started 12 games at cornerback, recording thirty-six tackles, four interceptions (tying for third in the Big Ten), and seven pass breakups. Shelton was the first true freshman to start in a season opener since Travis Frederick in 2009.
2. Shelton went undrafted
The Cardinals signed Shelton after he went undrafted in 2017. The Cardinals waived Shelton and the Bengals signed him in September of 2017. Shelton was subsequently waived by Cincinnatti in the next summer after a season on the practice squad.
3. Shelton spent a season out of football
After being waived by the Bengals, Shelton went unsigned last season. At 5-9, 168-pound, Shelton has the look of Eagles cornerback, Avonte Maddox. He’s among a handful of former Wisconsin players working out at Melvin Gordon’s training facility in Davie, Fla.
