The 2019 preseason finale is finally upon us and the regular season is well within touching distance. However you may feel about preseason fixtures, this game will prove the last chance for many players to realize their dreams of playing in the NFL, and for others could be the last time they put on the pads.
With this somewhat sobering fact in mind, here are three of the current Houston Texans who are in need of a good performance against the Los Angeles Rams if they are to solidify a roster spot either in Houston or elsewhere within the league.
1. cb Derrick Baity

The Texans are in dire need of depth at cornerback, and while relying on an undrafted rookie is not ideal, Baity has proved to be a solid acquisition so far. The 22-year-old out of Kentucky has recorded nine total tackles, two defended passes and an interception across two preseason performances.
He will find himself battling fellow rookies Xavier Crawford and Jermaine Ponder for a backup spot on this roster, and the final decision will likely come down to not only their secondary play but their special team’s ability.
2. WR Tyron Johnson
The Texans wide receiver situation is a tricky one to nail down. Keke Coutee, DeAndre Hopkins, Will Fuller, and DeAndre Carter are all certainties to make the lineup. Behind them at this point is somewhat of a guessing game.
Bill O’Brien has shown faith in Steven Mitchell and Vyncint Smith in the past, and both are favorites to make the roster, but not certainties. Johnson has very much been the ‘best of the rest.’ He has shown good pace and potential which could come in handy if injuries hamper them like they did in 2018. So far he has four receptions for 70 yards, and his experience as a returner on special teams may be what wins him that final spot.
3. RB Damarea Crockett

The Texans running back situation is entirely unknown at this point. With rumors spreading that a potential trade involving Jadeveon Clowney would include a running back in return, this is one of the toughest positions to predict. With Lamar Miller now out for the year, Duke Johnson will pick up the slack and Taiwan Jones is a favorite to make the squad due to his experience on special teams. That third spot remains a question mark. Should the Texans opt against bringing in an outsider then the favorite at this point should be Crockett.
The rookie has rushed for 83 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown this preseason and has shown some real flair and potential on occasions. He is still a diamond in the rough but could prove to be a solid backup if given the chance.
