Croatia 1 Czech Republic 1 as stalemate lays down Scotland Euro 2020 challenge – 3 talking points

The Czech Republic look to have booked their place in the last 16 after a hard-fought draw with Croatia.

A controversial penalty from Patrik Schick was cancelled out by an Ivan Perisic stunner that kept the former World Cup finalists' hopes alive of escaping Group D alive.

A debatable VAR decision saw a handball call go against Dejan Lovren, but Schick calmly slotted the ball into the net.

Despite struggling to get a foothold in the game, Croatia did level almost immediately after half time as Inter Milan star Perisic cut inside to thump the ball into the bottom corner fro the left flank.

With Scotland facing group favourites England tonight the result puts the pressure on Steve Clarke 's players as they face the Croats in the final Group D clash at Hampden.

It could all come down to the final game of the group with just three or four points potentially behind enough for one the sides to escape the group in third.

Here are three talking points...

Plenty to Cro about

Zlatko Dalic’s side were pretty much heading for the Euro exit door before Ivan Perisic’s searing effort two minutes into the second half pulled them back into this one .. and right back into Group D qualifying contention.

The opening 45 had been a repeat of their less than impressive 90 against England for the Croats who looked stuck in second gear. But as the game wore on legendary skipper Luca Modric began to exert his influence and combined with Perisic’s stunning leveller the duo, who have 243 caps between them, dragged their side right back into contention. It also keeps their remarkable record of never having lost the middle group game in 11 major events in tact. Ominously though it leaves them needing to beat Scotland to have any chance of qualifying.

Bayer’s market

Towering Bayer Leverkusen striker Schick was the difference against Scotland on Monday.

And again he was his side’s main man on matchday two as he shot to the top of the Euro 2020 scoring charts. Not only is the 6ft 2in striker a handful in the box - as Dejan Lovren discovered to his cost at the penalty incident - but he links play well, coming short when required and looks an all round classy number nine.

He showed composure to slot away the spot kick after taking the thump to the cheek from Lovren and Schick is already proving to be a surprise star of this competition.

Where this leaves Scotland

Much the same as before – in dire need of taking something from Wembley this evening. Should Steve Clarke’s side leave London empty handed then it would require a comprehensive victory over Croatia on the final matchday to stand any chance of squeaking through on three points.

A win would be within the realms of possibility given the inconsistent nature of the Croats. But whether Clarke’s side could rack up the goals is a serious doubt. Best just go out and thump England this evening and take things into our own hands.
