Building the Browns’ 2019 iteration premiered this morning on Cleveland’s ABC affiliate and the team’s YouTube page. The series went alongside the teams and gave an intimate look at the organization and was an excellent complement to the HBO series Hard Knocks from last year. The beginning episode was a bit slow, but it simply lays the groundwork for what’s ahead.
Here are 3 takeaways from the premiere:
Freddie Kitchens has some feelings on the state of coaching
Early in the episode, we see Freddie Kitchens preparing for his introductory press conference and on his way to the car, he makes a comment that no coaches want to evolve and they think they know it all. As a fan, this is something you love to hear. Not only is Kitchens cognizant of one of the biggest problems in coaching, he also knows that you have to evolve to survive. Only time will tell if Kitchens follows the mantra, but signs are good.
Todd Monken and Steve Wilks like what they have
One portion of the series was given to new Offensive Coordinator Todd Monken and Defensive Coordinator Steve Wilks. They quickly pointed out that they know there’s a great base in Cleveland to build on and they mused on the plethora of young talent they have. They went through just a few plays and they were some of the more iconic ones of the year, specifically the rollout pass by Mayfield to Jarvis Landry. Anyone would be excited to have these guys and since they filmed the episode, the team has only added more talent and depth.
This is a spin zone
The show should be a treat for Browns fans, but this is basically an in-house production by people who will not want to portray the team in any negative light. That’s great for fans, but there could be some problems we don’t know about. Time will tell and it will be interesting to see how they handle situations like running back Duke Johnson requesting a trade or the controversial signing of Kareem Hunt.
You can catch Building the Browns on Sunday’s at 11:30AM.
